Hedonism in times of war is one of the most controversial topics imaginable. While hedonism is usually associated with luxury, pleasure and a carefree life, war completely overturns these notions. People seek joy and pleasure under the most unusual conditions, even in the midst of fear, restrictions and suffering. <\/p>\n

Odessa, a city with a rich history and culture, has a unique myth – that of how its inhabitants live even in the most difficult times. Humor, self-irony and cheerfulness are deeply rooted in the city’s identity. Even in the darkest moments, the people of Odessa found the strength to smile, joke and carry on. <\/p>\n

The question of how to carry on when there is no strength left will be addressed in the reading by Iryna Fingerova, a doctor and author from Odessa. Ms. Fingerova currently lives and works as a general practitioner in Dresden and is a board member of Plattform Dresden e. V., which is committed to providing aid in Ukraine and promoting cultural exchange between Germany and Ukraine. Her literary works – from novels and essays to children’s books – have been translated into several languages and have a firm place in Odessa’s cultural scene. <\/p>\n
