02.11. | Giulia Caminito | 2.00 p.m.

During the war and the post-war period, unloved by her grandmother and aunt, Giada longs for the “Big A”, for Africa and her mother. She had started a new life in Eritrea to escape a restrictive marriage. The middle section of the novel is set there and tells of the difficult lives of the two women. At the end, when the revolution put an end to the Italian colony in East Africa, Giada and her mother return to Italy. Against the backdrop of the intertwined colonial history of Italy and Eritrea, the novel tells the story of two unequal women and their struggle for independence with great skill.
