The gift

Gaea Schoeters, one of the most exciting voices in contemporary Flemish literature, has published her next novel following the success of “Trophy”. In “The Gift”, Schoeters creates a scenario that is as absurd as it is revealing: in response to German environmental policy, 20,000 elephants are relocated from Botswana to Berlin. A government, a city and an entire country soon feel the effects and consequences of this ‘gift’ … Gaea Schoeters interweaves satire with real questions of ethics, responsibility, local politics and global contexts. The novel has echoes of a political grotesque, dealing with topics such as migration, nature conservation and Western sovereignty of interpretation – with a sharp eye for ethical dilemmas, humorous and highly topical.

In conversation with Urania Milevski, the author reads from the book and talks about the context and background.
