Grass Grenzenlos – New series of events organized by the Günter Grass Foundation Bremen
German Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass broke boundaries with his work and influence. His eye, always directed towards the most precise description of the state of affairs, transcends artistic, political and geographical boundaries of thought and action and his efforts to promote artists of foreign literatures inspire a new series of events under the motto “Grass Grenzenlos” (Grass Without Borders). Renowned artists from different countries and generations will be brought together to talk about their work.
Pit Holzwarth and Anna Wakulik will kick things off on November 14, 2025. The Bremen dramaturge (“Rio Reiser”, “Edith Piaf” and other blockbusters) and his young Gdansk colleague (nominated for the British Evening Standard Theatre Award, among others) are currently working on plays about Günter Grass, which will be premiered in 2027 at the Bremen Shakespeare Company and the Teatr Wybrzeże in Gdansk to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. In an exchange with each other, they will share the process of creating their new works, their research approaches, ideas and individual and national perspectives on Günter Grass.
The event series is a cooperation between the Günter Grass Foundation Bremen, the Bremen Shakespeare Company, the Festival Globale and the City of Literature. The venue is the Silo-Hotel John & Will on the Überseeinsel. The talks will take place in a lounge atmosphere with a view over the Weser. The bar will remain open during the event. The kick-off event will be held bilingually in German and Polish and will set the mood for the festive year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the city partnership between Bremen and Gdansk, which will officially begin on November 21 with a ceremony in Bremen City Hall.
An event with the Czech poet and politician Tomas Kafka and the Ukrainian Bachmann Prize winner Tanja Maljartschuk will follow on December 5.
