Trieste, 1920. Mattia is a fascist from the very beginning. His face is still beardless, which is why people call him “Bambino,” but his punches are so hard that half the city fears him.
Mattia doesn’t know who his mother is. Could she be one of those from over there? A Slovenian? His father, the anti-fascist and watchmaker, won’t tell him. Amid the mud and chaos of World War II, Mattia eventually loses all sense of certainty, and he learns that today’s winner can be tomorrow’s loser.

Marco Balzano

Born in Milan in 1978, he is one of Italy’s most successful authors . He writes primarily poetry and essays, as well as short stories and novels. He completed his studies in literature with a doctoral dissertation on Giacomo Leopardi and is active as a podcaster and on television, where he contributes segments on language and literature. He published his first novel in 2010. He was nominated for the Premio Strega for *I'm Staying Here*, and he won the Premio Campiello for *Life Doesn't Wait*. He lives in Milan, where he teaches literature.
