Slam poetry with Jessy James LaFleur

Jessy James LaFleur is a nomad by conviction, poetry activist, entrepreneur and rapper. Born in East Belgium, she has been performing her socially critical texts in three different languages on stages in more than 30 countries for 20 years. She is the founder of the “Spoken Word Academy”, which implements democratic poetry projects for young adults throughout Europe and focuses specifically on the East in Germany in order to do something about the growing shift to the right. In 2020, she was awarded the title “Kultur- und Kreativpilotin Deutschland” for her work, and since 2022 the academy has been part of the “Neulandgewinner” funding program. She runs workshops in schools and prisons and created the “Lost Poetas” collective for young women* from rural areas. Her first play “Confessions of a paper plane” premiered in 2018, in 2021 she released the spoken word album “DOMA” together with cellist Natasha Jaffe and in 2023 she published her feminist anthology “Aufbruch ist weiblich”. Jessy James LaFleur lives in Berlin and Prague. “DOMA – A Home for a Paper Plane” will be published in book form in March 2026.
