The Curtain
Translation by Daniel Pusch
Josef Kaarl is a successful IT entrepreneur and a generous patron of the Prague Philharmonic. He also loves his family. One day, his daughter is arrested on suspicion of being a left-wing extremist. Now he sees only one solution: she must learn what it means to live in a workers’ paradise. That’s when he comes across an offer from a travel agency: “A Trip to Communism! Experience the 1950s firsthand!”
But what begins as a seemingly harmless, staged one-week experiment quickly turns into a disaster for the entire family. The meticulous reconstruction of 1950s Czechoslovakia descends into an oppressive scenario of power, manipulation, and fear.
