Jeanette-Schocken-Preis 2024 goes to Tanja Maljartschuk
We congratulate Tanja Maljartschu, who was a guest at globale° in 2023, on winning the Jeanette-Schocken-Preis.
The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven.
The jury explains: “The Jeanette-Schocken-Preis 2024 is awarded to Tanja Maljartschuk. With her collection of essays ‘History is about to continue, we are just breathing out’, the Ukrainian writer adds her country’s experience to the history of violence in Europe. Born in 1983 in Ivano-Frankivsk, the author precisely describes the effects of Russia’s expansionist policies on individuals over generations. Free of pathos, but with a tactile gesture and clever language, she combines personal experience with her country’s renewed struggle for freedom and also embarks on a search for Ukraine’s Jewish past. Her essays, stories and novels are characterized by a painful humour with which she casually reveals the abysses of our pan-European history. In doing so, she focuses on repressed traumas and the resulting fears – whether biographically, through historical research or with the narrative means of the absurd. Tanja Maljartschuk is not only taking personal responsibility for a common European past and present, but also for all of us.”
